Want to bring wallets from other applications with you on Hana? Follow the guide below to migrate externally created wallets to be managed within Hana.
⚠️ Important: Hana recommends using seed phrases whenever possible to import wallets for the best experience. Learn more about seed phrases and why they matter: What is a seed phrase?
Step-by-Step Guide: Adding External Wallets to Hana
Before You Begin
You will need either:
A seed phrase (preferred)
A private key
Option 1: Import Entire Wallets Using a Seed Phrase (Preferred)
If you have a seed phrase for your wallet, you can restore the entire wallet during the initial setup of Hana on a new device. This method allows Hana to derive compatible wallet addresses for all supported blockchains seamlessly.
Install Hana on Your Device:
Download and install Hana on your desktop or mobile device.
Select "Restore Wallet" During Setup:
On the setup screen, choose the option to Restore Wallet.
Enter Your Seed Phrase:
Input your 12, 18, or 24-word seed phrase into the field provided.
Complete the Setup:
Hana will automatically generate your wallet addresses for all supported chains, including EVM, ICON, Sui, and Stellar.
Your wallet is now ready for use.
Why Seed Phrases? Seed phrases allow Hana to create addresses for multiple chains simultaneously, ensuring compatibility across ecosystems.
Option 2: Add Wallets Using a Private Key
If you are already set up with a Hana account, you can add individual wallets by importing their private keys. Keep in mind, private key imports are chain-specific, which means that addresses for some chains (e.g., Sui or ICON) may not be generated when using a private key from another chain.
Access the Hamburger Menu (☰):
Open Hana and click the hamburger menu in the upper-right corner.
Select "Add a Wallet":
From the menu, choose the ‘Add a Wallet’ option.
Choose "Restore with Private Key":
On the next screen, select Restore with Private Key.
Enter Your Private Key:
Paste your private key into the field provided and click Continue.
Your Wallet is Added:
Hana will add your wallet, but note that addresses for certain chains may not be generated due to private key limitations.
Limitations of Private Keys: Private keys are tied to specific chains. For example:
An EVM wallet private key (Ethereum) cannot generate additional addresses for non-EVM chains like Sui or Stellar.
A Sui wallet private key won’t generate addresses for ICON or EVM chains.
Read more about these limitations here.
For a complete, multi-chain experience, Hana recommends using seed phrases instead of private keys.
Why Use Seed Phrases Instead of Private Keys?
Seed phrases are the foundation of hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallets, allowing Hana to derive compatible addresses for all supported blockchains automatically. Private keys, on the other hand, are tied to specific chains and often result in limited compatibility.
Benefits of Seed Phrases:
Multi-Chain Compatibility: Seed phrases generate wallet addresses for all blockchains supported by Hana, including EVM, ICON, Sui, and Stellar.
Ease of Use: Import one seed phrase instead of multiple private keys for each chain.
Future Flexibility: Seed phrases ensure that your wallet remains compatible with Hana as new blockchains are added.
Tip: Always store your seed phrase securely. For backup tips, see the section below.
Tips for Secure Backup:
Offline Storage: Always store your backup information offline. Avoid keeping it on your computer or cloud storage.
Multiple Copies: Create multiple copies of your backup and store them in different secure locations.
Security: Never share your seed phrase, keystore file, or private key with anyone. Treat these as highly sensitive information.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your Hana Wallet is backed up and your assets are protected. Remember, a proper backup strategy is essential for the security of your digital assets. For more guidance on secure best practices, read our important security tips for new users.
