Step-by-step guide to backup your Hana account and wallets

There are two ways to create backups on Hana, either by backing up your Hana account, or individual wallets.

Method 1: Backup Hana account

This option will show you the unique seed phrase for your Hana account that you were shown when you first set the account up. You should already have a backup of this saved from initial set-up, but if the original backup has been lost then this guide will help you to replace it.

This seed phrase will backup all wallets created by your Hana account. It will not backup any wallets that have been migrated to Hana from external wallet applications.

  1. Launch Hana on your device.

  2. Select the hamburger menu (☰) located in the upper-right corner of the Hana homepage.

  3. From the menu, select the ‘Settings’ option to access your wallet's settings.

  4. In the settings menu, select ‘Wallets’ to view all the wallets associated with your account.

  5. Identify and select the wallet you wish to back up from the list.

  6. Select the ‘Backup wallet’ option.

  7. For security reasons, you will be prompted to re-enter your Hana account password. Enter your password to proceed.

  8. Choose the ‘Seed Phrase’ Backup option.

  9. Carefully write down the 12 or 24-word seed phrase and store it in a safe place. Do not share this phrase with anyone.

  10. This seed phrase will be able to recover your Hana account in the event that you lose access. Read our ‘Tips for Secure Backup’ section below for suggestions on how to store this information.

Method 2: Backup individual wallets

This option will provide you with either a keystore file or private key for an individual wallet of your choice. These backups will only be able to restore a single wallet and will not restore your Hana account. Individual wallet backups are best used to replace lost backups for wallets that have been migrated to Hana from external wallet applications.

  1. Launch Hana on your device.

  2. Select on the hamburger menu (☰) located in the upper-right corner of the Hana homepage.

  8. Choose either the ‘Keystore File’ or ‘Private Key’ Backup options:

    • On the following screen, select which chain you want to create your backup for.

    • If you selected ‘Keystore File’ you will now need to create a password for the file you create. Then select ‘Create Keystore File’ and the file will be saved to your device. Store the file and make note of its password in safe locations.

    • If you selected ‘Private Key’ you will now be able to select ‘Copy’ to add your Private Key to the clipboard. This can then be saved to a safe location in a notepad file.

  9. Ensure your backup files are stored in a safe place and do not share them with anyone.

  10. These backup files will be able to recover their respective wallets on a separate instance of Hana, or on an external wallet application. Read our ‘Tips for Secure Backup’ section below for suggestions on how to store this information.

Tips for Secure Backup:

  • Offline Storage: Always store your backup information offline. Avoid keeping it on your computer or cloud storage.

  • Multiple Copies: Create multiple copies of your backup and store them in different secure locations.

  • Security: Never share your seed phrase, keystore file, or private key with anyone. Treat these as highly sensitive information.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your Hana wallets are backed up and your assets are protected. Remember, a proper backup strategy is essential for the security of your digital assets. For more guidance on secure best practices, read Important security tips for new users.
